The county medical examiner rules Bobby Dean’s cause of death a fatal bear attack.

Robyn informs me the next day he has no family outside of a sister in Detroit. She’s insisted Robyn donate the books from his collection to the library. She claims to have no use for them, and from what Robyn relates, thought her brother was an aimless, troublesome man who should have found a “real” job, rather than peddling used books around the South. She went so far as to suggest he provoked the bear in question and “got what was coming to him.”

Robyn, Augusta, and I pack up the books in the tent, and several officers deliver those from the camper as instructed. Molly deems we can sell most at the volunteer book tables, but as she’s sorting through them, she creates a stack with a frown on her face. “No, no, definitely not,” I overhear her mumbling.

The pile grows bigger.

I stop my sorting. “What’s wrong with those?”

She doesn’t even glance up. “We’ll be throwing them away.”

Over my dead body. “I’ve never put a book in the trash in my life and I don’t intend to start.” I walk over to look through them. “We have plenty of patrons who would enjoy these. The rest can be sold. Why would we junk them?”

I know why, but I’m not backing down today. After everything that’s happened, my nerves are on edge and I’m tired of side-stepping her weird hang-ups about certain genres.

Her hands cease dividing them up and she fixes me with a glare. “The last time I checked, I am the librarian here, not you, Belle.”

“That’s true, but you’re not throwing any away while I’m around.” I grab the stack and march out.

Daisy waves when I push through the door, arms hurting from the weight. Jayne, who’s in the window, jumps down and greets me, tail wagging, as I nearly dump them on the floor. A few still manage to fall, scaring the dog and causing her to jump back.

“What in the world?” Daisy bends to pick those up. Jayne edges forward to sniff at one.

I set them on the author’s signing table that’s ready for tomorrow, huffing out an irritated sigh. “Molly was going to throw these away. I couldn’t let her do it. She wouldn’t even entertain the idea of putting them out. I know there are folks in town who would love them, so I’m going to put them on ours.”

Daisy clucks and shakes her head. “That Molly. She’s got some funny ideas about what people should and shouldn’t read. I’m beginning to think she’s not the best person to be running our library.”

“Unfortunately, I’m starting to think the same.”

We sort the various hardbacks and paperbacks by genre, and a few are nearly brand new, so Daisy catalogues them to put on the shelves.

I set up and arrange the rest out there, grabbing one of the flyers to make a quick sign on the blank side to state that they’re two dollars apiece. I tape it to an oversized Alice in Wonderland edition with beautiful illustrations.
